About Us

Discover the story behind The Red Lion and meet the team welcoming you to East Kirkby.

The Rich History Of The Red Lion

Nestled in the peaceful village of East Kirkby, Lincolnshire, The Red Lion has been a cornerstone of community life for nearly two centuries. Originally built in 1841, the pub has weathered the passage of time, evolving from a simple beer house into the warm, welcoming destination it is today.

Early Days & Village Life

In its earliest days, the Red Lion served as a local meeting place for villagers, farm workers, and those passing through. East Kirkby itself is a small civil parish in East Lindsey, famed for its historic church of St Nicholas and the nearby former RAF station.

Back in the mid-1800s, pubs like the Red Lion played an essential part in rural life — not just as places to drink, but as community hubs.

Wartime Connections: RAF East Kirkby

One of the most compelling chapters in the Red Lion’s story began during the Second World War. RAF East Kirkby, located just beside the village, was a crucial Bomber Command station.

The pub became a regular haunt for aircrew and ground staff from nearby squadrons — notably 57 Squadron and 630 Squadron, both of which flew Lancaster bombers from the airfield.

Inside the pub, you’ll find a table signed by aircrew, a gentle but powerful tribute to those who passed through or rested here in wartime.

This enduring connection to RAF history has become part of the pub’s identity, drawing in visitors who come to explore the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre just down the road.

Closure & Revival

Like many rural pubs, The Red Lion has had its ups and downs. At one point, there was a planning application for a change of use, but it was rejected — thanks in part to local support for keeping it alive as a pub.

Under new ownership, the pub was lovingly refurbished and reopened. Now, it balances its historical roots with a modern, welcoming feel.

A Place for Visitors & Travellers

Today, The Red Lion isn’t just a pub — it’s a destination. With its campsite and holiday lets, it provides a peaceful countryside retreat for guests who want to explore the area, including the aviation heritage nearby.

Whether you’re here for a pint, a roast, or a weekend under the stars, the pub remains deeply rooted in local history — but also very much alive in the present.

Community & Legacy

More than just bricks and mortar, The Red Lion represents the spirit of East Kirkby: steady, welcoming, and full of stories. Its connection to WWII airmen gives it a gravitas that moves people. At the same time, its role as a gathering place, a rest stop, and a retreat shows just how much the pub still matters to the village and visitors alike.
